This tutorial will show you how to create a smoke effect using photoshop.

Before you start.

1. You will need to download the ’smoke’ brush from here–> Download link
2. Find an image, works well on text image or you could type something up on photoshop… a name or a word then save it as a JPG file. (Like used in this tutorial)

Image created and used in this tutorial

Lets start.

Create a new document:
Background color black
And from the brush set you downloaded from the above link, choose the brush number 1091.
Change the brush size to 666 px in your photoshop master diameter.
Brush Color to White.
Click it once on the background. (Name the brush layer ’smoke’)
Duplicated the smoke layer. (Name the duplicate layer ’smoke 2′)

Now open up your image file that you created earlier.  (I named the image ‘Smoke text img’ in this tutorial)
Drag the image and drop it in front of the two smoke layers.

Next ‘Right click‘ on the ‘smoke 2‘ layer—–> Click on blending options—–> Click on Stroke
and apply these settings:

Size: 3px
Position: Inside
Blend mode: Lighten
Color: You can use any color you wish. I used color blue code ‘00f3f0′
See the example image below.

*Blend the image with the smoke
**These settings below totally depends on the image that you have picked.
Choose the Image that you imported into you background
Now grab the Smudge tool and settings:
Soft brush with master diameter 100px
Mode: Normal
Strength 30% (play around with this to get the results you want)
Now drag the smudge tool across the image.
If it’s too complicated watch the video below
(Forget the settings on the video it’s shown above, just watch how I drag the smudge tool across the image)

That’s it!! Now that was easy…….

You can also play around with the image and come out with various results. See below image
